The Danish School of Education at Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant/associate professorship in quantitative education research.

The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year training position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is based at DPU campus Emdrup/Copenhagen or Aarhus. It is important that the successful applicant takes part in the daily activities of the department, including both teaching and supervising. Since the department is situated in both Aarhus and Copenhagen, the successful applicant should expect some travel activity between Aarhus and Copenhagen.

The position
We are looking for someone with knowledge of research in the field of quantitative education research with research interest in international comparative assessment studies. The successful applicant will become part of the research team at the Danish School of Education that is responsible for the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) in Denmark. http://edu.au.dk/forskning/internationaleundersoegelser/timss/
Additionally, the applicant is expected to have expertise in research within the standard educational system. Expertise in another substantive research area in the field of educational sociology or in a related discipline would be advantageous.

The successful applicant should be able to document research qualifications at PhD level or the equivalent within the field of quantitative research methods. The assessment will attach importance to the research and teaching qualifications of applicants within the area covered by this position. We also expect the successful applicant to cooperate with the research environment focusing on large-scale assessments related to the IEA studies, especially in relation to the TIMSS study, which is one of the research activities conducted by the National Centre for School Research. 
 
Key criteria of the assessment will be the quality of the research output, which is expected to meet international standards, and successful teaching experience at university level within the field of quantitative school research.

Research
We are looking for a candidate with a documented research profile at international level within at least two of the following areas:
• Experience of survey research methods
• Experience of the measurement of student achievement and test construction
• Experience of advanced statistical data analysis
• Experience of educational research focusing on various target groups of pupils or students enrolled in the standard educational system.

Teaching
The successful applicant must be able to document the competence to teach and provide supervision on the Master’s degree programme in educational sociology, and to contribute to qualifying and developing the teaching offered at Bachelor’s and Master’s level.
The assistant professor will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching designed especially for assistant professors.


Talent development
If an assistant professor is appointed he/she will be expected to develop his or her supervision capabilities at MA level.

If an associate professor is appointed he/she will be expected to contribute to talent development in relation to quantitative education research. He/she will be expected to supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications
The successful applicant for the assistant professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in educational research and must be able to document:
• An internationally oriented research profile within at least two of the areas mentioned under the heading ‘Research’
• Experience of applying quantitative methods
• A relevant and internationally oriented publication profile
• Experience of or interest in participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of or interest in communication and knowledge exchange
• Experience of interdisciplinary collaboration as well as interdisciplinary research
• Experience of or the potential for obtaining external research funding
• Experience of or interest in interdisciplinary teaching, including innovative teaching methods
• Experience of or interest in supervising student projects, and interest in researcher talent development.

The successful applicant for the associate professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in educational research as well as research and teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship, and must also be able to document:
• A strong research profile at international level within at least two of the areas mentioned under the heading ‘Research’
• Experience of applying advanced quantitative methods
• A strong, relevant international publication profile
• Participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of participation in collective research projects
• Teaching experience in areas of relevance to the Master’s degree programme in educational sociology, interdisciplinary teaching experience including innovative teaching methods, and mastery of academic English in the classroom
• Proficiency in languages relevant to the area of research
• Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation
• Experience of attracting external research funding
• Experience of supervising student projects and an interest in researcher talent development.

The successful applicant must be able to teach and publish in English. If the successful applicant cannot speak Danish, she/he will be required to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the department’s academic environment. We emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.
