The Department of Educational Philosophy and General Education at the Danish School of Education at Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant/associate professorship in educational theory, including general didactics.

The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year training position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is based at DPU campus Aarhus. It is important that the successful applicant takes part in the daily activities of the department, including both teaching and supervising. Since the department is situated in both Aarhus and Copenhagen, the successful applicant should expect some travel activity between Aarhus and Copenhagen.

The position
We are looking for a candidate with broad systematic knowledge of the main Western traditions in educational theory (pedagogy), including in-depth knowledge of didactic theory and the development of teaching competences within the field of education.

Research
We are looking for a candidate with a research profile in educational theory (pedagogy) and general didactics. The position involves research within the field of educational theory, including general didactics and programmes of education designed for young people and adults. The research is expected to contribute to both theory and practice in these fields.

Education
The position involves teaching and supervision on the Master’s degree programme in general education. Applicants should preferably have experience of (and the ability to contribute to) the development of teaching and didactics at university level.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants are expected to be interested in (and preferably to have experience of) knowledge exchange with society in relation to the research area, to ensure that the knowledge possessed by the university benefits society directly in the form of public-sector consultancy, research reports for other stakeholders in society, and the communication of research results. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Teaching
The successful applicant must have solid teaching experience at BA and/or MA level.
If an assistant professor is appointed, he/she will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching designed especially for assistant professors.

Talent development
If an assistant professor is appointed, he/she will be expected to develop his or her supervision capabilities at MA level within the fields of educational theory, including general didactics.

If an associate professor is appointed he/she will be expected to contribute to talent development within the fields of educational theory, including general didactics. He/she will be expected to supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.

Qualifications
The successful applicant for the assistant professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in general education (pedagogy) or similar, and must be able to document:
• Systematic knowledge of the Western tradition of educational theory (pedagogy), including general didactics
• Experience of designing and carrying out empirical studies within the fields of general education and didactics
• An internationally oriented research profile
• A relevant and internationally oriented publication profile
• Experience of or interest in participation in international research networks
• Experience of or interest in communication and knowledge exchange
• Experience of or interest in participation in collective research projects
• Experience of or the potential for obtaining external research funding
• Experience of or interest in the development of innovative teaching methods
• Experience of or interest in supervising student projects, and interest in researcher talent development.

The successful applicant for the associate professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in general education (pedagogy) as well as research and teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship, and must also be able to document:
• In-depth and broad systematic knowledge of the Western tradition of educational theory (pedagogy), including general didactics
• Strong experience of designing and carrying out empirical studies within the fields of general education and didactics
• An internationally oriented research profile
• A strong, relevant international publication profile
• Participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of participation in collective research projects
• Teaching experience in areas of relevance to general education, and experience of innovative teaching methods
• Mastery of academic English in the classroom
• Proficiency in languages relevant to the area of research
• Experience of attracting external research funding
• Experience of supervising student projects, and an interest in researcher talent development.

The successful applicant must be able to teach and publish in English. If the successful applicant cannot speak Danish, she/he will be required to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the department’s academic environment. We emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.
