The Danish School of Education at Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant/associate professorship in the field of school research. The successful applicant will be located at one of the school’s six departments spread across the two campuses in Emdrup/Copenhagen and Aarhus respectively.

The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year training position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

It is important that the successful applicant takes part in the daily activities of the department to which he/she belongs, including both teaching and supervising. Since the departments are situated in both Aarhus and Copenhagen, the successful applicant should expect some travel activity between Aarhus and Copenhagen.

The position
The assistant/associate professor must have expertise in pedagogics and education in the field of school research. This may comprise one or more of the following areas: the development of teaching plans and subject didactics, the development of learning environments, school development with a view to ensuring the well-being and learning processes of pupils, and the training and history of the teaching profession. Applicants must also have expertise with regard to qualitative and/or quantitative methods, and experience of participation in research teams using and developing these methods in combination, i.e. using and developing a mixed-method approach. Applicants with expertise in the mixed-method design of research projects and/or research-based development projects in the field of school research will be preferred, and will be affiliated with research projects in relation to the National Centre for School Research (NCS). Like all other staff at the Danish School of Education, the successful applicant will be located at one of the school’s six departments spread across the two campuses in Emdrup/Copenhagen and Aarhus.

Research
Applicants must be able to document experience of research in pedagogics and education in the field of school research, as well as experience of educational research for target groups of pupils enrolled in primary or secondary education (equivalent to ISCED levels 0-3). More specifically, the successful applicant must be able to document research qualifications at international level in one or more of the following substantial research areas: the development of teaching plans and subject didactics, the development of learning environments, school development with a view to ensuring the well-being and learning processes of pupils, and the training and history of the teaching profession. Finally, the successful applicant must be able to document experience of – and expertise in – qualitative and/or quantitative methods and experience of participation in research teams using and developing these methods in combination, i.e. using and developing a mixed-method approach.

Teaching
The assistant/associate professor must be able to teach one or more of the above-mentioned academic themes in relevant degree programmes, as well as being able to contribute to teaching teams in the degree programmes conducted by the Danish School of Education.

If an assistant professor is appointed he/she will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching designed especially for assistant professors.

Talent development
If an assistant professor is appointed he/she will be expected to develop his or her supervision capabilities at MA level.

If an associate professor is appointed he/she will be expected to contribute to talent development within the field of school research. He/she will be expected to supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange. In particular, the assistant/associate professor will be expected to take part in the public debate regarding pedagogical and educational themes in Denmark and internationally.

Qualifications
The successful applicant for the assistant professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in the field of school research, and must be able to document:
• Research of international standard within one or more of the areas mentioned above
• Experience of qualitative and/or quantitative methods
• Experience of participation in research teams using and developing these methods in combination, i.e. using and developing a mixed-method approach.
• An internationally oriented research profile
• A relevant and internationally oriented publication profile
• Experience of or interest in participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of or interest in communication and knowledge exchange
• Experience of interdisciplinary collaboration as well as interdisciplinary research
• Experience of or the potential for obtaining external research funding
• Experience of or interest in interdisciplinary teaching, including innovative teaching methods
• Experience of or interest in supervising student projects, and interest in researcher talent development.

The successful applicant for the associate professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in the field of school research as well as research and teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship, and must also be able to document:
• Research of international standard within one or more of the areas mentioned above
• Experience of qualitative and/or quantitative methods
• Experience of participation in research teams using and developing these methods in combination, i.e. using and developing a mixed-method approach
• An internationally oriented research profile
• A strong, relevant international publication profile
• Participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of participation in collective research projects
• Teaching experience in areas of relevance for the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes conducted by the Danish School of Education, interdisciplinary teaching experience including innovative teaching methods, and mastery of academic English in the classroom
• Proficiency in languages relevant to the area of research
• Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation
• Experience of attracting external research funding
• Experience of supervising student projects, and an interest in researcher talent development.

The successful applicant must be able to teach and publish in English. If the successful applicant cannot speak Danish, she/he will be required to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the department’s academic environment.
